Sveta Gora hill

Sveta gora or Skalnica is 682 m high hill, which rises above Gorizia plain and mighty basilica at the top of its reign over Nova Gorica.

Legend of the creation of the church on the Mount says that is a Saturday in 1539 Mary appeared wagtail Urška Ferligoj from nearby Grgar who tended sheep on the hill, and commanded her to put her house there. Five years later, people from the surrounding valleys already build powerful cut stone church with three naves, the Patriarch of Aquileia Marino Grimani and it gave the famous image of Mary with Child, the work of the Venetian painter Palma older. The first church was actually standing on the Mount in the 14th century, which was later destroyed the Turks, probably the 1470th Later, the church was again destroyed during the 1st World War in June 1915.

The current basilica was built in 1928 as planned Silvana Baresija and conceived as a three-nave church with a transept. Large is 72 x 22 m. The present main altar dates from 1932, followed by the buried Gorica Archbishop Francis Borgia Sedej and apostolic administrator of the Yugoslav part of the archdiocese of Gorizia Michael Toroš. In one of the chapels is buried first Slovenian cardinal Missie Jakob, born in a village not far from Križevcev at Mura. To the left of the main altar is "pilgrimage" chapel - a room with many gifts of people who were miraculously healed or otherwise otherwise heard, and they brought their gifts of Mary in gratitude. Other attractions in the church are: stone slab engraved with the prayer "Hail Mary" from the 14th century (the remainder of the first church), built-in wall of the main altar, left of the entrance into the winter chapel (held here late Gothic statue of Madonna with Jesus in the 16th century), baroque way of the cross in 1765, the bells of 1929 and the large stained glass windows and organ in 1939.

The top platform before the church opened up magnificent views towards the Karst to the sea, west and the Brda, Friuli plain, Carnic Alps and the Dolomites and the Julian Alps and the Trnovo forest in the north.

Son and her home on fire, in addition to the Basilica of Mary's Assumption, found in a Franciscan monastery and in it Mary's museum with a permanent base on the Sveta Gora (drawings or photographs of the earlier church, and some inventory from the previous church on the Mount, four icons plotted on timber and other) , large and comfortable restaurant and small museum 1st World War with a permanent museum exhibition on the Isonzo front, which raged through the Skalnice, with numerous exhibits and archival photographic and documentary material.
